Contact Lenses Q & A

Eye Physicians Of Austin

Why do I need a fitting?

In addition to an examination and evaluation by one of our Board Certified Ophthalmologists, patients will require a contact lens fitting if:

  • You are a new patient to our office and we did not fit your contact lenses.
  • You’ve had enough change in your current contact lens prescription to warrant a new fitting
  • Your current contact lenses have not been comfortable and you would like to switch brands

Why a fitting fee?

  • Contact lenses take extra time and special testing beyond the normal medical/vision exam
  • A proper base curve and diameter for the contact lens is determined after various tests
  • Instruction on insertion and removal is given, if needed
  • Proper care of contact lenses is given along with a sample of contact lens solutions
  • Diagnostic lenses are dispensed when possible; for more complex prescriptions, lenses will have to be ordered

How long does it take to get contact lenses once I’ve had a fitting?

You will more than likely leave with a pair of trial lenses in your prescription. Although, if we discover you need a slight change during the fitting and evaluation process it usually takes a day or two to get your new lenses. Custom lenses will take slightly longer and will require one or two additional fitting appointments.

How much are contact lenses?

Prices vary depending on the type and complexity of your prescription.

Do I have to purchase my contacts lenses through your office?

We recommend that you purchase your initial supply of contact lenses through us, since we have the flexibility of exchanging unopened boxes or replacing damaged or defective lenses for you. Custom or Specialty fittings require material purchase through us due to the custom nature of the lenses.

Does my insurance cover contact lens professional fees/materials?

We only file claims through Superior Insurance. For all other insurance carriers, we will be happy to provide you with an itemized statement of your charges and payment so you can file a claim on your own.

After I get my trials, how do I order boxes or get a copy of my contact lens prescription?

We will be happy to fill your contact lens prescription, which normally takes a day or two. If you would like to purchase your contact lenses elsewhere, once your fitting is completed and you are seeing your best, we will be happy to provide you with a copy of your contact lens prescription.

Why do I have to pay for a fitting when I just had a complete eye exam by the doctor?

All patients require a contact lens evaluation every year by the Ophthalmologists. During the exam, the Ophthalmologist medically assesses your eyes to make sure your cornea, lids, and lashes are healthy enough to support contact lens wear. If you are a first time contact lens wearer, the Ophthalmologist will assess if you are a candidate for contact lenses.

Why can’t the doctor write me a contact lens prescription?

The doctor’s examination does not result in a contact lens prescription. The doctor will provide you with an eyeglass prescription which will serve as the basis for your contact lenses. Proper contact lens fitting requires the knowledge and experience of a skilled contact lens fitter who specializes in providing you with a lens that is comfortable and provides the best visual acuity possible. This thorough fitting may take more than one appointment with our contact lens fitter.

Do you fit contact lenses on patients other than those seen by Eye Physician of Austin physicians?

No, we only see contact lens patients who have had a thorough eye examination by one of our own Ophthalmologists.

How will I know if I need a custom lens?

After a thorough examination by one of our Ophthalmologist and our contact lens fitter, your best contact lens options will be determined and discussed with you to best fit your visual needs.

What if I need rigid gas permeable lenses?

We have decades of experience fitting rigid gas permeable lenses and will be happy to fit you with the latest in rigid gas permeable materials.

Will you give me a trial of my new prescription before I buy?

Most disposable contacts are available in complimentary trials. Although, some types of contacts are not available in complimentary trials, i.e., colored soft lenses, gas perms, or Custom Specialty planned replacement. These lenses must be purchased.

How long is a contact lens prescription valid?

Per Texas state law, a contact lens prescription is valid for one year from the date of your last exam with the Ophthalmologist.

Do I need to see the doctor again if I’m still seeing well out of my current contacts and they are comfortable?

Yes, you will need to have a complete eye exam every year regardless of your current vision or comfort with your present contact lenses.

Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act: This act went into effect February 4, 2004. As stated by this Act, you are entitled to a copy of your contact lens prescription once the prescription is finalized by our contact lens department. Receiving a trial lens IS NOT a finalized prescription. Contact lens prescriptions are valid for one year, per Texas state law.
