Considering Your Unique Information Before LASIK

Find out about LASIK's full possibilities for you. Contact Eye Physicians of Austin for a LASIK screening. It's free. Or just call and ask questions first. Either way, we're happy to help you.

During your free screening and consultation at Eye Physicians of Austin. the LASIK surgery team members, including the ophthalmologist , will thoroughly examine both eyes (even if you're considering LASIK for only one eye at first).

To help you decide about LASIK for your unique eyes, you'll hear individualized explanations about the improvements (usually excellent), risks (almost always tiny) and other facts especially about your eyes. (If you decide not to have LASIK, other options for vision correction may work for you.) We'll also discuss costs.

To help you get the best results from LASIK, your ophthalmologist needs the best information about your eye. So we often do quick, painless tests such as these:

  • Computerized wavefront mapping: A beam of light produces eye information as unique as your fingerprint. The ophthalmologist programs the LASIK laser with this wavefront data to help produce customized reshaping of your cornea. For more details, see About Wavefront LASIK.
  • We use the most precise instrument to measure the exact size of your pupil, even in total darkness when the pupil is largest. The tool (the Procyon dynamic infrared pupillometer) is a rare instrument in Austin. But Eye Physicians of Austin believes it's worth having.
  • For a very complete analysis of the entire cornea's thickness, we use the Orbscan, which takes 9,000 measurements in 1.5 seconds. Many other instruments measure only a few spots on the cornea.
  • We also check whether someone has corneas warped from wearing hard contact lenses. If so, the person probably will need to switch to eyeglasses for a while. The switch will allow the corneas time to become more normal, which means high-tech devices will give much better guidance to the Eye Physicians of Austin LASIK surgeon. If you wear soft or gas-permeable contact lenses, you'll also need to stop wearing them for a while. Ask your LASIK surgeon for details.

Your chances for having great laser eye surgery in Austin improve with the combination of high-tech instruments and personal attention available from the Eye Physicians of Austin LASIK surgery specialists.
