Vision and Pregnancy

Changing shapes and fluid retention are not limited to your belly and feet when pregnant. Your corneas can also change shape, causing blurred or distorted vision. In many cases, these symptoms are not severe and will disappear after giving birth, or when a new mother quits breastfeeding. However, the appearance of flashing lights, vision loss or light sensitivity can signify the onset of preeclampsia. If you experience any of these symptoms during pregnancy, contact your doctor immediately.
In addition to blurred vision, pregnancy can also cause your eyes to become dry, making contact lens wear difficult or uncomfortable. If you are experiencing dryness, you can use artificial tears to lubricate the eyes, as long as the drops are safe for pregnant mothers to use.

If you experience a change in vision during pregnancy, contact your eye doctor and schedule an appointment to have your prescription for glasses or contacts adjusted.
